Instructor: Lt. Ron Shreves,
L.A.S.D. (RET’D.)
Lt. Shreves retired from the Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s Department in 2003 after thirty-three
years of service. His last assignment was Commander
of the Sheriff’s Lancaster Station Detective
Bureau. His myriad experience includes the creation
and management of a Crime Analysis Unit. Lt. Shreves
currently serves as an adjunct instructor in the
Administration of Justice Department at Antelope
Valley Community College where he has taught for
over sixteen years. He lectures at law enforcement
seminars around the country and is recognized
nationally in the field of Covert Operations.
Seminar Title: Career Planning
for Law Enforcement
Seminar Description: This seminar
will give the attendee a comprehensive and candid
understanding of what a career in law enforcement
entails. He/She will learn the best ways to prepare
for the entry process and receive valuable tools
for successful employment and advancement.
Rationale: Many outstanding
candidates work hard toward a career in law enforcement
for years only to find later that they have not
properly prepared or have made poor choices which
affect their background investigation. Many who
are successful in being hired find too late that
the job is not what they expected. Their choices
then include starting over in a new career, sacrificing
their accumulated seniority or staying with an
unfulfilling career.
Goals: This seminar is designed
to provide the attendee with an honest look at
the law enforcement field and to supply him/her
with the tools for success.
CAREER PLANING SEMINAR
OVERVIEW: A comprehensive look
at the law enforcement discipline. What it is
and what it is not. What are the qualities law
enforcement agencies are looking for? An examination
of attendee perceptions of the job as well as
diverse public perception. A look at the role
and importance of ethics in law enforcement.
CAREER OPORTUNITIES: A look
at the diverse assignments within the law enforcement
community. Study to examine sworn and non-sworn
assignments alike. An examination of the organizational
structure, the potential for promotion and assignments
to specialized units.
THE RESUME: The development
of an effective, relevant personal resume.
EDUCATION: What are the minimum
educational requirements? Benefits of higher education.
What courses of study will be most useful.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: A discussion
of minimum physical requirement and ways to achieve
success.
THE WRITTEN EXAM: A discussion
of the make-up of the written exam and an actual
practice exam.
THE ORAL INTERVIEW: A discussion
for success in the oral interview process and
mock orals for all students.
THE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:
What will your background investigator will be
looking for. What will disqualify you and what
will not? This session will include an opportunity
for students to discuss privately issues they
believe might disqualify them and receive guidance
in that regard.
FOLLOW-UP AVAILABILITY: Instructor
will be available to students for future mentoring
and advice as student moves through the hiring
process.

This seminar offers the high school student envisioning
a career in law enforcement, a comprehensive view
of the field. The seminar will emphasize a factual
view of the field, educational preparation, physical
requirements, the hiring process, the promotional
process, assignments to special units, the written
and oral exams and the background process. The
field is increasingly employing technical positions
such as Forensics Investigators and Crime/Intelligence
Analysts along with the traditional role of Sworn
Police Officer. The seminar will examine both
sworn and non-sworn career opportunities.
At a time when high school seniors are making
career path decisions, many will decide upon a
career in law enforcement. The field is highly
competitive and only about one in ten candidates
are successful. Information as to an accurate
view of the field, educational and physical qualifications,
ethical standards, and what to expect from the
testing process will greatly enhance the candidate’s
chances for success. College Administration of
Justice Programs, law enforcement entities and
future law enforcement candidates stand to gain
much from this experience.
The
goal of this session is to provide the high school
senior with a comprehensive look at the field
of law enforcement. Attendance will encourage
continuing education in the Administration of
Justice Field and enable the student to make an
informed decision about a career in law enforcement.
The student will become much better equipped for
success.
The seminar will employ
lecture, related videos and will proctor a sample
civil service examination.
Instructor will avail himself to attendees via
web site and e-mail for future advice and direction.
